I hope you are all well because I am in a state of shock right now. (Well not really, but a little bit shocked and freaked out)
I normally don't write articles, but I am really at a loss of words right now.
One of a collector's nightmares just came true for me:
As probably most of you I also own a Detolf and had no problems with it so far (for about a year) but today one of the shelfs of said Detolf cracked and broke apart, letting all my Panty and Stocking figures fall on my Racing Miku and the figures from Drrr. As you can imagine, lots of glass shards also hit the figures which also damaged and scratched the bases as well as(thankfully) only chipped some paint from some of my figures such as Celty and Miku. Unfortunately the Ahoge of Miku also broke but fortunatley her pony tails "only" have some paint flaws. (Thank you GSC and Alter for your great quality!)
W..well....what should I do now? How can I repair scratches and holes in the bases and is it better to paintbrush my figures or just repair the scratches with a brush?
I'm sorry I really don't know what to do atm, but I am happy that I was lucky enough to have all my figures more or less in one piece....
I might edit this article later or add some pictures but atm I really just don't know what to do...*cries in a corner*

Ok here some better pics (though my cam really sucks, sorry) of the damage that was done. I tried to fix the Hair of Racing miku but it looks quite unclean...:/
All of the white parts on the bases are chipped away plastic, unfortunately its not just my cam making crappy pictures...
Izaya here got a huge blue paint scratch

I put shatter-proof sheeting on my shelves and I'm considering putting some acrylic sheeting under them for extra security.
This is my worst nightmare, sorry it happened to you, man =/

They all do it. :) Mine made a very loud, kind of...like something heavy fell on the floor-sound at first and some hours later finally broke through with an even louder sound.^^" Sorry it's very hard to describe since I never heard something like that before.
Thanks a lot! Yeah, actually all the fragments were pretty close together, but since all the figures had to be fished out and some of them lied around, torso and lower body part separated, it was quite a mess at the end.^^"
Ha, true! Thank you for mentioning this! Though I thought about maybe replace the glass with plastic...but coated glass sounds good as well! As soon as there is more time I will ask a glass shop for their prices...

The good news is that you can just go to any glass shop to have it replaced, and you might even be able to get the coated stuff so it doesn't fall apart, it will just hold together in a spiderweb and hopefully not collapse... but that stuff could be quite expensive. Never know till you call a glass shop. Thanks a lot! But yeah, Klingsbos also seem a bit sturdier with their metal frame (I also own one. :3) and they look quite elegant so I will probably get rid of my Detolf and get a Klingsbo instead! But since I am a sucker for glass-objects and don't like wooden furniture too much, it seemed like the only logical solution for displaying my figures. Though I would certainly not buy a Detolf again. Indeed, IKEA is not the best quality, especially if it comes to wooden furniture since they use chipboards instead of sturdy wood like you would buy from a carpenter. A big plus for IKEA is the price though, since most furniture is way more expensive. (And most of the times the quality is not really that better.^^") It certainly would be better to invest your money in something that's got a very good quality and I can't speak for everyone but the reason why I mostly buy IKEA furniture is because it is quite cheap and since my home right now is only temporary as long as I am studying in Germany it is not really worth the effort and money to get high quality furniture.^^" But yeah, glass is not as safe as wood, but since things like randomly shattering glass only happen very rarely it is thankfully not that risky to display your figures on glass. I guess the people who display figures on glass just love to live dangerously. XD (Btw. since I am a very clumsy person, I and my bf already put the cabinets in positions where I won't knock them over or accidently hit them etc. XD) Hmmmm well there are those acrylic cabinets: www.google.de/i... but they probably aren't that easy to get for some countries.

Maybe some scratches can be removed from the Drrr bases if I only work on the translucent parts and just leave the parts with the graphics like they are now.

Hopefully it was just a defective Detolf and others don't have the same issue. :(
My grandma has been using a glass shelf curio cabinet for 60 yrs and never had a problem, so I dunno if glass is made differently now or what happened. I felt safe about using glass shelves because of my grandma's display curios but now I'm worried. Thank you. >///< That's what I hope too! Some users already mentioned that this happened before but as Shinhawk said it seems pretty uncommon. It is probably just a production fault or something like that in my case, since my other cabinets never had any problems (and they are way older than my Detolf). Glass can be quite strong but it's pretty fragile too, but I would say most of the time nothing happens. So please don't be too scared just because something bad happened to me. >_< You know, my TV table and even my working table at my parents are mostly made of glass and nothing ever happened to them in all those years. But if you want to be completely safe, wood is probably the better choice.
NiponSan • 9 years ago • #1879668Seeing this article makes me feel that i should seriously consider when displaying my figures in the detolf :/ Hmm yeah it seems like something like this rarely happens (as others already said) But if you think about all the users who use Detolfs and never had any problems I guess buying a Detolf is quite safe (Though I will stay away from that wicked thing in the future! >_<). But maye a different cabinet is a bit safer since Detolfs really are pretty flimsy in comparison to other glass cabinets.

Take care when you handle the figures now, and when you clean the broken glass. You don't want any of those tiny pieces getting under your skin...
